We were hedonists, never destructive.
The British group Duran Duran (more or less popular for their image rather than their songs) played once in Argentina, in 1993 in Vélez. Nevertheless, this is the first time that the original lineup will play here, with Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor. The band in reality reunited to record a record: Astronaut (2004). "Our related creativity was what brought us together when we were younger. If we couldn't do it again, write melodies or being creative and free, there wouldn't have been a base possible to rebuild everything," tells the guitarist, Andy Taylor, who joined the band in the late 70's(a little before Simon Le Bon), after reading an ad in the popular rock paper Melody Maker.
"At that time, the last pages of Melody Maker had tons of ads looking for musicians. In the late 70s and the 80s, you couldn't make music without a group of people. Now, one guy can do it from his house. To form a band, you had to find people. When I saw the ad, I grabbed the phone and called, because of the way it was written and because it was bigger than the others."
¿How was it?
In life, there are times when you meet people where everything (snaps his fingers). I felt like this was one of those moments. There were 20 other guitarists but apparently I was the only one who could play (laughs). A few weeks later, Simon arrived. And in 3 weeks, the whole thing was set.
And "the whole thing" implies that they made a couple of albums that became super successful, like Duran Duran (81) and Rio (82). And, that in less than five years, the group would unleash duranmania all over the world, basically catapulted by the spread of video through MTV, which helped them become superstars.
¿How did you deal with fame? ¿And what happens now?
At first, you don't realize it. It's not something conscious where one day you wake up and say: "I've become a superstar". It's something that creeps up on you. And then things begin to happen like there are thousands of people in front of the record stores and you say "My God!" In our case, there came a time when things went out of control. In the US, Japan, or Great Britain, it became difficult for us to go out in the street. It was madness. When you're young, it gives you great pleasure being a person who can't walk out in the street. But after some time passes, it's not so wonderful because you have to change your daily life.
¿How did that come about?
I think we managed it better than alot of other groups. None of us is dead, we're all in good health: we're all here. And plus we have alot of fun. Duran Duran always got near the dege of the cliff but never fell into the precipice. We all have a stong will. We can take things to the extreme but we'll never get arrested for going too far.
¿Why did you feel like you'd reached the edge?
We were a band that took drugs but not as much as other groups. Now I see people do things that I would never do, where pleasure ends and destruction begins....I believe we were only hedonists, never destructive.
