Wild Boys Duran Duran land for tour-ending Red Carpet
by David Lindsay
An irrepressible Duran Duran arrived at Malta International Airport yesterday afternoon to a small but zealously enthusiastic crowd of picture takers and autograph seekers.
The band – today comprised of living legends Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor – were clearly in high spirits upon touchdown, judging by the good humoured tone of the press conference they gave.
And with good reason. The 80s supergroup, which has had continued success upon success over the last 30-odd years, wraps up its 2008 Red Carpet Massacre European Tour with a highly anticipated concert at Luxol Grounds tomorrow night.
Nick Taylor said he was “genuinely excited” about tomorrow’s outdoor show, adding that he was expecting the Maltese crowds to live up those in Italy, where the band just concluded a tour of outdoor ‘piazza’ shows.
He said he was particularly proud of the group’s last album, Red Carpet Massacre, which was “made against all odds” and involved producers and artists Timbaland and Justin Timberlake.
As for tomorrow’s set, Le Bon said that with Malta being the tour’s last show, the band has fine-tuned its line up, a blend of their favourites from the old to the new – adding he hopes it will be “a show for Malta to remember”.
Asked where he would place the band in musical history, Le Bon, after a moment’s reflection and a wide grin on his face, said, “somewhere between (Bob) Dylan and (Brian) Eno”.
At another point the subject of style cropped up, with the band having been known for their look over the decades, Nick Taylor grabbed hold of Le Bon’s leg and wrangled off a Croc sandal. Holding it aloft he asked, “Somebody mentioned style?”
The band has sold some 70 million albums over three decades and has dozens of memorable hits under its belt including classics such as Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, Wild Boys, The Reflex, Notorious and later hits such as Ordinary World and Come Undone.
Red Carpet Massacre is Duran Duran’s 12th studio album and was released in November 2007 in Europe. It was the fruit of their efforts following the departure of Andy Taylor, and when Timbaland began working with the band.
Le Bon also dismissed speculation that the band could be working on a future Bond tune, following the 1985 View to a Kill theme tune to the James Bond film of the same name, as pure “rumours”.
