DATE: December 1, 1998

Nick Rhodes was a founder member and keyboard player with the hugely successful 80's pop band Duran Duran. They've had 13 top ten hits, two number ones, seven top ten albums, and a combined weeks-on-chart total for their singles and albums of over 10 years!
Michele Fink asks: "Any thoughts on the new generation of duranies - those not born before RIO?"
Nick Rhodes: "Yes, I think we realized when we went on tour in 1993 with the Wedding album that we had actually had a whole new audience and we crossed over generations and they're all very welcome to our family."
Lisa: "When I see you at Wembley, what sort of stuff can I expect to hear - will you be playing anything from Medazzaland or will it be all your greatest hits?"
Nick Rhodes: "We will be playing a mixture. It will be a hits driven show but there will certainly be some songs from Medazzaland and a few surprises that weren't singles."
Trudy: "Does it feel weird without John in the band?"
Nick Rhodes: "No, not at all. I miss John, we didn't really want him to leave but those were the circumstances and Duran Duran has always been about change so we move forward and wish him luck with his things."
Ida: "Over the years you've had many image changes - are there any outfits/hairstyles you cringe at now?"
Nick Rhodes: "I don't look at them long enough to think."
Pepper: "If there was another band you could have been in, which would it be?"
Nick Rhodes: "Goodness me! That's a question and a half. The Velvet Underground."
Lesley PG asks: "What is your favourite piece of Duran merchandise?"
Nick Rhodes: "The collapsible Japanese opera glasses and the phone cars were pretty good. And Duran Duran batteries."
milt: "I heard Nick is a primary force behind duranduran.com and its creation, is this true?"
Nick Rhodes: "Well seeing as it's taken us so long to get it together I don't like to admit to it, but yes. I hope it's worth the wait. We'll be doing webcasts from the tour and a webcam is going about shortly."
Emma C asks: "Do you think there is a chance that all five of the original members of Duran Duran will play again?"
Nick Rhodes: "I would never say never but it isn't in the schedule at the moment. I did speak to Andy early today about some other matters."
Jimmy Bond asks: "Why was "Violence of Summer" left off Greatest? I think it was one of your best ever releases."
Nick Rhodes: "There's a lot of songs missing from the album I would have liked to have included White Lines and Do You Believe in Shame. I guess EMI just aren't so keen on that one."
JonPaul: "What colour is your hair for the tour?"
Nick Rhodes: "Don't know. Haven't been to the hairdressers this week. Any suggestions."
N Silva asks: "How is the progress of your new album going and is the title still 'Hallucinating Elvis'?"
Nick Rhodes: "At the moment it is, it's a song we've completed and all the backing tracks are done. We're just working on the vocals and few overdubs. I think, hopefully, it'll be finished early March."
Vez: "Who will be playing Bass on the UK tour? P.S I'm REALLY looking forward to it!"
Nick Rhodes: "Wes Wehmiller. He's played with us before, on the Medazzland tour last year and he's becoming a permanent fixture."
Jimmy Bond asks: "What was the most unusual thing a fan has ever done to meet you?"
Nick Rhodes: "Dressed up in a medics outfit, I think. She managed to fool the security. She was very charming."
lucas: "Hello Nick, there has been a lot of talk of releasing TV Mania material over the last few years. Are there still plans to release some and if so, why the delay?"
Nick Rhodes: "TV Mania is very dear to my heart. It's an ambitious project in that it will be 3 separate cds that form the whole project. The first one will definitely be coming out in spring in 1999. So I hope you like it."
Diane Aguilar asks: "Of all the periods/stages Duran Duran has gone through, which one(s) is/were his favorites?"
Nick Rhodes: "Well it's always the new one because I like moving on, but having said that there's many times throughout our career that I think we've reached certain apexes, I guess Rio, Notorious and Big Thing...and the first one as well. There's nothing like putting your first album out."
Yasmin Duran asks: "How about back to basic black for a hair color? "
Nick Rhodes: "I did consider it, but perhaps a little too gothic for the moment. I'm in an autumnal colour phase."
Marc H asks: "Who are some current bands that you enjoy listening to?"
Nick Rhodes: "I really like Beck, I like odd songs you know. I like the Air album, I think it's good. Bittersweet Symphony, the Verve song. The Cornershop song, Brimful of Asha."
Joanne: "Name one person who has most influenced your life? And why?"
Nick Rhodes: "Difficult to name one...mainly movie directors and painters, I guess. Somewhere between Fellini and Warhol."
b5chele: "Any big plans for the turn of the century?"
Nick Rhodes: "I'm terrible at planing ahead. I'm not sure what I'm doing tomorrow."
Bart: "Will you please release a concert video from one of the 97 or 98 shows. It's been way too long."
Nick Rhodes: "I quite agree and I hope so. We are planning to film something on the British tour."
Anita: "I've noticed you're not shown very prominent in videos. I was wondering why."
Nick Rhodes: "I don't know. I should spend more time talking to the directors."
Diane Aguilar asks: "I've noticed a lot of religiousness / spiritualism connected to Duran Duran songs. Are any of the members religious or spiritual in any way?"
Nick Rhodes: "Religious, no. Perhaps optimist about life after death and yes, fans of some great tranquil peacemakers in the world, I think."
pat hills asks: "Which is better: the 1980's or the 1990's?"
Nick Rhodes: "Well they are both completely different. I'm actually having more time to enjoy the 90s, I think. The 80s were great fun but also completely chaotic. The 90s we seemed to have controlled our chaos a little more."
Joanne: "Do you look at many of the Duran sites on the Net?"
Nick Rhodes: "I have seen a fair few, yes. Um, I take my hat off to the lizard king."
Sting: "Is there a chance that Duran Duran will come to Vienna again or somewhere near?"
Nick Rhodes: "To Vienna? Um, it's always a pleasure to go to Vienna, such a beautiful city. I think a European jaunt is long overdue."
lucas: "How many tapes would you estimate you received when you asked people to submit to your Lo-Fi label?"
Nick Rhodes: "Aah, several hundred I suppose. Some of which were really good."
Lisa Carroll asks: "Why hasn't Medazzaland been released in the UK?"
Nick Rhodes: "I could actually write a telephone directory about this. Basically we had a major falling out with our US record company Capitol because we felt they were mishandling Duran Duran projects so we spent most of this year negotiating our way out of a contract which he have now successfully done and we are free to release Medazzland some time in the future. It's been so long since we write those songs now that we think Hallucinating Elvis will probably be released before. Oh the irony."
Amy Carrano asks: "How do you feel about Duran Duran constantly being referred to as an 80s band even though DD have never split up and have been making albums since 1981?"
Nick Rhodes: "Um, it is mildly irritating, however, people who say those things are obviously ignorant of the facts and so one must not take it too seriously."
Trish: "I'm at work - any suggestions for battling creative blocks?"
Nick Rhodes: "What do you do at work? I usually think of something I enjoy doing and completely change the subject. I have a battle in my mind against the thing that's blocking it."
ravestar: "Do you need an Italian supporter band for your tour (obviously I'm joking!)"
Nick Rhodes: "Well, actually, um, we would have considered one but we, I think it's already been decided."
neecoal: "With the new album having a song I'm guessing about Elvis, are any of you big Elvis fans?"
Nick Rhodes: "No, not really. I'm quite a fan of Elvis's wardrobe and he did have a marvellous voice but perhaps ,apart from the Greatest Hits, I don't have that many of his cds."
Darren Smith asks: "I recently bought the autobiography of David Sylvian, in it he claims you approached him to produce Duran Duran, is this true?"
Nick Rhodes: "No. Not at all. I admire some of his work but we never approached him."
Joy S asks: "Will there be any more Internet single releases ONCE duranduran.com is running?"
Nick Rhodes: "We are planning on using the internet site for many exclusive things in the future. However, there remains many copyright problems. Our site is now ready to be put up properly and as you'll see there are many different sections some of which are completely interactive, other such as the archive which will keep growing. It's really unusual."
PaleScene: "What was the squiggle thing you used to sign instead of an 'n' in your autograph?"
Nick Rhodes: "I can't remember. I'd have to see it. Send me a version if you've got one. Sure it isn't a forgery??"
Sana - Japan asks: "Please tell us your impression of Japan and Japanese audience?"
Nick Rhodes: "Duran Duran have always had a good affinity with Japan, from the very beginning. Outside of England, it was the first place that we had a hit single with Planet Earth. So we always like to go there, I love the architecture and the people are very gracious."
lisa binkley asks: "I have always wondered if you have ever read any of the fan fiction that is written about you and how you feel about it."
Nick Rhodes: "Yes, fascinating. Like being on a therapist's couch. I often see the fanzines of which there are many, and I know how hard the fans work on them. Some of them now and then reaching incredible standards."
maria: "Nick are you still glad you're on the music scene of the 90s?"
Nick Rhodes: "Yes, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't enjoying it. I think the new things that we do are as exciting to me as anything we've ever done."
Mat: "Any suggestions on excuses to give my girlfriend when I'm 30 mins late picking her up from work ,as I am leaving in a minute?"
Nick Rhodes: "(laughing) That's a good one. "I was stuck in an internet discussion with Nick Rhodes about alien life and out of body experiences when suddenly I realized I had to re-enter my own body to catch a bus to go out and see my girlfriend. The alien said this was inexcusable but Nick talked him round." If she doesn't believe that then she's got a problem."
Yasmin Duran asks: "In what way does he feel that D 2 has impacted upon the music industry...did they help define an era"
Nick Rhodes: "I think so. But modesty prevents me from rambling on about it too much."
MyMuse: "Now that your daughter is getting older (and the other kids as well) what does she think of dad's band?"
Nick Rhodes: "Well my daughter Tatjana is very excited about the concerts at Christmas time and I know Simon's kids are too. They like to be involved and be part of it."
Helen P asks: "Do you miss the crazy times of '82-'86? Would you want to do it again or are you happier now?"
Nick Rhodes: "Been there, done that. And it was a great ride but you can only watch a movie so many times and we're onto the next thing already."
Darren Smith asks: "There are rumours on the net that Girls On Film had been remixed by today's best remixers, are there any plans to release new versions?"
Nick Rhodes: "The versions are coming out in the UK and some places in Europe when we release Electric Barbarella in January. The mixers are Salt Tank and Tin Tin out, I believe."
JimW: "What are your next media events as my girlfriend is still mad about Duran Duran (she even used to chase you around....)"
Nick Rhodes: "The British tour which kicks off in Birmingham on Dec 7 and ends at Wembley in the 21st of December. Next year the first plan is to finish the new album and then we'll see."
lucas: "Are the tracks you wrote for blondie ever going to be released?"
Nick Rhodes: "It's a pity that they weren't released. Unfortunately record company politics once more thwarted a couple of great tracks. Blondie are tied up with all kinds of legal issues with EMI so I can't see them being released in the near future. Warren and I as TV Mania may well use the songs for another project."
Joanne: "I hear you and Madeline are engaged - Congratulations! Have you set a date yet?"
Nick Rhodes: "Actually Madeline and I are not engaged. However we are very happy. I think this all started from a very large plastic ring."
Anita: "What do you think about all the fanzines that are out there?"
Nick Rhodes: "I'm astounded at the quality of them, the production values. I'm sure some of the people making them will go on to work on other magazines. And there's always something I learn about Duran Duran that I never knew."
TKB-europe: "Nick, how does it feel to be about to play live again?"
Nick Rhodes: "I'm excited actually, because we haven't played in Britain for around 4 years. The band sounds good. So we're looking forward to getting out there."
Trish: "Are you able to live any kind of "normal" life - like going to the grocery store without being accosted?"
Nick Rhodes: "Yes, however I was accosted in the grocery store on the Kings Road the other day. A very pretty young lady with a large trolley full of food."
Helen P asks: "Do you still love orange smarties or have these been replaced with more exotic tastes?"
Nick Rhodes: "I think that was Simon and I do remember that in the early days someone threw thousands of them on stage and they were like little ball bearings."
Trudy: "If there was any point in your career you could re-live, what would it be?"
Nick Rhodes: "Gosh. I'm not very good at nostalgia. Probably some of the shows that we really enjoyed and finishing any album."
Mireille: "Is it weird watching your own fans growing up in a way?"
Nick Rhodes: "I don't suppose it's any weirder than them watching us growing up."
Mireille: "As far as alien life-forms... are there any?"
Nick Rhodes: "For sure. I'm very suspicious about one of my neighbors."
beeb: "That's the lot I'm afraid .... here's a final word from Nick..."
Nick Rhodes: "Thank you all for logging on. I hope we'll have some more contact through duranduran.com in the coming months. for those of you who've been waiting all year for something to happen I do promise that the site is going to change very dramatically. Make sure you've got quicktime video and IE4. Please give us your thoughts when you check in. Til the next time, thanks again and bye."
